Breakthrough House (BTH) has a year planned of exciting growth and positive changes as we continue to serve even more Shawnee Co. residents with Severe or Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) in 2017. Everyone at BTH is very appreciative of your past support. Without financial help from people like you, BTH would not be able to help our consumers move towards a more functional and happier life in society.
One of our planned events is a Golf Tournament on May 1, 2017. This tournament will be held at Cyprus Ridge Golf Course at 2533 SW Urish Rd., Topeka, KS. It will be a Four-Person Scramble with a shot-gun start at 12:30pm. Would you or your organization consider being an event sponsor at one of our donor levels? Please see the attached pages for more information on tournament registration and donor sponsorship opportunities.
People with mental illness need social support and activities, sometimes just someone who can lend an ear and give reassurance things will be okay. This is what Breakthrough House provides. Breakthrough House helps people who live with mental illness in three main ways:
The Breakthrough House Clubhouse – Our Clubhouse offers a relaxing place to meet people and participate in various activities.
Breakthrough Residential Services – BTH currently provides housing for 32 individuals in two group homes and five apartment units.
BTH Representative Payee Department – Our Payee Department works under the authorization of the Social Security Administration.
Breakthrough House wants to better meet the growing need for the support that in some instances, only BTH provides in Shawnee Co. Won’t you please consider rounding up three more golfers to have a fun day of golfing for a good cause? Or can you or your organization be an Event Sponsor at one of the possible levels?
Thanks so much for your consideration!
Breakthrough House, Inc. is a nonprofit community agency established in 1978 to support the recovery of individuals with mental illness by providing services, supports, and opportunities to improve the quality of their lives. Through the efforts of staff and volunteers, interaction with peers, and community involvement, individual needs are met, social and vocational skills are restored, and self-esteem is strengthened, encouraging the men, women, and children who participate in our programs to contribute their talents and abilities to the benefit of themselves and others as they live, learn, work, and play.
A student at the University of Kansas, searching for a way to meet the internship requirement for her Masters Degree in Social Work, decided to pursue starting a support group for persons in Topeka recovering from mental illness. She discussed her idea with the director of the local Mental Health Association and with others who shared her vision, and together they initiated weekly meetings at her house. What began then as a small network for patients and former patients from Topeka State Hospital, the Menninger Clinic, and other therapeutic settings has grown to become a full-fledged community of mutual support.
Our mission is to empower individuals with mental illness to function more independently in their social, living, and working environments and to secure decent, safe, and affordable housing for them in Shawnee County. The people we serve are on a journey toward recovery from mental illness. Our philosophy is to meet them where they are, to accept them as they are, and to walk side-by-side with them on that journey—supporting them, empowering them, working in partnership with them to achieve their goals for independence and employment.
